Viña Albina "Late Harvest" semisweet white 2008 A unique wine, winemaker whim, sybaritic pleasure
Felipe Nalda, the winemaker who for half a century has been the technical director of Bodegas Riojanas, knew the secrets and peculiarities of a type of wine as special as semi-sweet white, whose roots in Rioja are attributed to the French influence of the late XIX century. Remember also that this type of wine were a great commercial success during the fifties and sixties, they were considered the favorite wines of women. But changes in consumer trends made only a few wineries classic, with well-established brands, keep this style of wine, as happened with the most famous and traditional dry white Rioja with long aging in oak barrels.
The appearance of Viña Albina "Late Harvest" occurred precisely in full turnaround, just thirty years ago. Confess Felipe Nalda confesses that during the harvest of 1983, he discovered a part of the vineyard with non-harvesting white grapes.
Already become as a Reserva, the wine had a premiere for the exclusive delight of the attendants to the celebrastions of the centenary of Bodegas Riojanas in 1990. The success encouraged to keep trying every time the vintage allowed it (currently only are comercialized two vintahes: the 2001 and 2008), and the production is limited to about three thousands bottles, making this wine as genuine and original, and hardly comparable to other wines.
This semisweet white reserve (90% Viura, 10% Malvasia) stands out for its finesse and elegance. With late harvest ripening and foci of podredumbr enoble and aged for 16 months in American oak barrels. Straw yellow color with golden tones and very specific aroma, the secret is in the balance between its natural sugar content and acidity, giving it character and charm, understated sweetness with authentic fragrance.
