Throughout its 100-year history, the winemaking techniques have evolved because in Bodegas Riojanas the innovation goes hand in hand with respect for tradition. Being a classic winery, the company combine the local winemaking techniques. This enables us to adapt to current market trends.

The Vineyards

Passion for land

Bodegas Riojanas controls more than 300 hectares of vineyard. From the best vineyards in Cenicero, San Vicente de la Sonsierra and nearby towns. The red grape par excellence in Rioja is Tempranillo, but Bodegas Riojanas also has one of the largest areas dedicated to Mazuelo and Graciano within the Denomination, varieties that provide greater personality to their wines.

The different plots of vineyards are situated on clay-limestone soils, of Miocene origin, suitable for producing the highest quality.

The Harvest

The ritual of obtaining the fruits of the land

In early October, after going through the heat of summer, the harvest, which is more than simply pick grapes, is carried out. The choice of the optimum time for harvesting, the productivity of vines, sorting out the grapes intended to produce the different types of wines... All will have influence in the final quality and characteristics of the wines obtained.

The batches of grapes from old vineyards are collected in boxes, to prevent the pressure produced by the weight breaks the grapes and arrive in the best conditions at the winery. Once there, they undergo a meticulous manual selection bunch by bunch, making wines that are the greatest exponent of quality of Bodegas Riojanas.

The Aging

The rest to make great wines

Once the grapes became wine through fermentation, it undergoes a process of aging in barrels and then bottled, all meet the minimum requirements established by the regulations of the Designation of Origin Rioja and following the criteria of the Technical Department of the winery. The time spent in barrel and bottle determines the different categories of wine: Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva.
