A vintage 2012 "small, high quality" in the Toro Appellation, as assessed by Bodegas Torreduero

When the harvest 2012 is almost completed in the Toro Appellation, the technical director of Bodegas Torreduero, Felipe Nalda, assessed as "low and high quality" a harvest which is going to be around twenty million kilos of grapes in the whole guarantee of origin, and expected "some wines more balanced than in previous campaigns." Bodegas Torreduero began the harvest the last week of September, reference dates in recent years, following a growing season marked by a lack of rain and continuous heat waves during the summer. Nevertheless, as stated Felipe Nalda "the fruit has endured very well and matured without any problem." "We harvested grapes of great health and that, curiously, not in general have accused summer water stress. It is a grape with lower alcohol potential than it usually does, especially in the last two harvests, a characteristic that, in principle, allow us to obtain wines more balanced than in previous campaigns. " For Torreduero technical director, is also a determining factor in the final quality of the harvest the use of new technologies in the warehouse, such as allowing the removal of potassium by cation exchange, which is decisive in order to obtain fresh and aromatic wines, and great track record in aging. Similarly, by applying short fermentation at low temperatures, "we have obtained whites and rosés full of fresh fruit characters, and red wines with a high content of anthocyanins," concludes Felipe Nalda. The Toro Appellation, founded in 1987, currently has 5,800 hectares of vineyards spread over twelve municipalities of Zamora and four in Valladolid, just like 53 wineries, including Torreduero, founded by Bodegas Riojanas Group in 1999. It occupies one of the leadership positions. Bodegas Torreduero develops the brands "Peñamonte" and "Marqués de Peñamonte", both of them combining the local winemaking tradition with the state-of-the-art winemaking techniques, which is decisive to maintain the features that have given them the unmistakable character of their origin, whilst providing a modern style, allowing the adaptation to the current market trends.
